Why?, a band from California, has made the biggest impression on me in the last few weeks. This is truly genre bending music, and Yoni Wolf’s hip-hop inspired take on songwriting is refreshing. Ive been listening to Alopecia, and their next record Eskimo Snow comes out next week. Some of the best lyrics ive heard in a long time, and I feel like some doors have been opened for me (thank you henry).
I’ve been going through a bit of a John Lennon re-visitation phase. The extent to which he has influenced the core of my vocal sensibilities has been striking me. I’ve been looking up to him since I first started playing.
Also, for the first time, I’ve been going through an obsessive Velvet Underground phase. I discovered, while painting my new room, that their music is excellent to throw on. I am endlessly compelled by the vocal personas, the disarmingly honest writing, and the use of noise that seems ahead of their time.
Other albums that I have been throwing on include Broadcast¬: Tender Buttons, T. Rex: Electric Warrior, and Grizzly Bear: Veckatamist.
And I haven’t yet bought the new Mason Jennings, but John and Chris say it’s good and that makes me excited…
