Return to Blog.

The title of this post is a reference to a famous jazz-funk fusion band that included Chick Corea called Return to Forever.  I didn’t intend to form a link between the words blog and forever, but then again maybe I did.

I’ve decided to stick with the 3-photos-per-post motif as I’ve been generally uninspired by any other format, and inspiration is key to avoiding wankery in the blogosphere.  Also, creativity spawned through limitations has worked well before: Nate’s arms were nearly non-functional for the recording of our last album and we were forced to move away from the piano-rock sound that had previously defined us.  Other examples of this phenomenon include black and white photography, writing on a typewriter, and most of the accomplishments of 18th and 19th century medicine.

These photos have been taken with my little brother’s camera, a camera that takes really nice pictures despite its modest pricetag.  It’s bulky by today’s standards, but its large lens lets in much more light and as a result it takes fine pictures without a flash in dim situations (see picture #2 of this post).  The subject of these photos is our sessions at Electric Wilburland recording studio, a renovated church that we’ve taken over for about a week and a half.

This first picture is of my new bass, to which I’ve quickly reached a level of personal attachment that some may find disconcerting.  After owning the instrument for a week it’s become a person with feelings and a name (I’ve decided to call it Max, or Maxwell for short [that’s right, Maxwell for SHORT]); it’s a phallic extension of my masculinity; it’s a picturesque object of beauty that I can see no fault in etc.  It certainly helps that’s it’s an extremely well crafted and great sounding instrument.  I highly recommend anyone serious about bass playing check out Lakland (pronounced LAKE-land) basses if your not uncomfortable with idolatry.

This is Nadine, a good friend and our unofficial band artist/photographer while we’re in the studio.  She was a welcome presence throughout the recording of our previous EP and we’re really glad to have her back for these sessions.  You can find some of her glorious work here.

This is a picture of the live room filled with more drums than you could find growing on a drum tree.  Matt Saccuccimorano, owner of the most misspelled name in history, is an excellent drummer and the producer of this project.  He is also mostly responsible for this mess.  The hilarious thing to me is that there’s also a drumset set up and an array of 5 different snare drums that are out of view of this picture.  Insanity.

That’s it for now.
