We’re not musicians. We’re META musicians.

So.  We got way behind on our blogging, and all the long stories I wanted to tell about this and that have faded into little snippets.  Maybe it’s better that way.  We’ve been working on music, mostly, which ultimately you’ll find more satisfying than a large set of blog entries anyway.  Right?

Friend: Hey, so did you guys write any great songs during the tour?
Me: No, but we sure did keep a consistent blog going.

That’s not the musician I want to be.  But a few words might be fun while I wait for Dana to finish splitting up the recordings from last night’s set.

I believe we left you in Canberra, which feels like a lifetime ago.  Canberra is a strange little city.  Unlike most complex entities, it did not evolve in a series of simple steps.  It was planned and built.  Apparently Sydney and Melbourne couldn’t agree on which city should be the capital, so the Australians just built a new city.  It’s even got a large man-made lake.  Canberra is exceptionally easy to navigate and eerily lifeless.  The restaurants, the streets, and the sidewalks are all too big.  Walking around the city feels like playing to 20 people in an 800 person rock club.

That said, the club we played in, the Phoenix, was delightfully small and full of people who seemed to appreciate the live music.  When we finished, they demanded an encore.  When we finished the encore, they demanded another.  One guy even offered to pay us $50 for one more song.  I immediately agreed (into the microphone), and the guy, to his credit, walked up to the stage and handed me a $50 bill.  This has never happened before.  It made me feel just a little whorish.  At least, I think it did.  I’ve never really whored.

Since Canberra we’ve been to Melbourne, Adelaide, Belgrave, and tonight we’re in Melbourne again.  I’m out of time, though.  John and Dana are pestering me to go get lunch with them, and food feels right right now.
